Wander Franco Faces New Gun Possession Charge Amid Ongoing Legal Battle
Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, already on trial in the Dominican Republic for sexual abuse of a minor, now faces an additional charge for illegal possession of a handgun. Prosecutors allege Franco was involved in a parking-lot altercation in November, during which a Glock 19, registered to his uncle, was found in his vehicle. Franco’s legal team contends the gun was lawfully licensed and not his responsibility. If convicted on all charges, Franco could face 20 to 30 years in prison. The 24-year-old, who hasn’t played since August 2023 and remains on MLB’s restricted list, signed an 11-year, $182 million contract in 2021. This latest development could further complicate MLB’s domestic-abuse policy review and deepen the uncertainty surrounding Franco’s career.
