TSA Begins Phasing Out Shoe Removal Rule at Select U.S. Airports
The Transportation Security Administration is starting to phase out its long-standing shoe removal rule at select U.S. airports, including Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale, Portland, and Seattle–Tacoma. Originally put in place in response to the 2001 "shoe bomber" incident, the policy shift now gives travelers with REAL ID a chance to keep their shoes on during screening. The update, rolling out in July 2025, is meant to streamline the travel experience and reduce hassle at checkpoints. While the rule change has been welcomed by many travelers, some critics argue it could reduce airport security effectiveness. In tandem with the update, travel experts are advising passengers to wear easy-on, easy-off shoes to move through security more efficiently.
