FTC’s $2.5 Billion Settlement Forces Amazon to Refund Millions of Prime Members

Millions of Amazon Prime users in the U.S. are receiving automatic refunds after the FTC secured a historic $2.5 billion settlement against the company for deceptive enrollment and cancellation practices. Of that amount, $1.5 billion is being returned directly to consumers who were enrolled through unclear or manipulative checkout flows and used fewer than three Prime benefits annually. Payments began going out on November 12, 2025 and will continue through late December. The remaining group of eligible users—those who didn’t receive automatic payments—will be able to file claims starting December 24. Refunds are estimated up to $51 per person. The FTC warns consumers to avoid scams and notes it will never request fees or banking details to issue a refund. This landmark case highlights growing scrutiny on subscription-based platforms and how tech giants handle user consent.
