Ken Burns’ *American Revolution* Redefines the Nation’s Founding Story
Ken Burns’ latest PBS documentary series, *The American Revolution*, premiered on November 16, 2025. This 6-part, 12-hour exploration reexamines the story of America’s founding, pushing beyond familiar battlefield narratives to explore lesser-known dimensions of the Revolution. The series highlights the roles of Native nations, enslaved people, women, and Loyalists, while framing the conflict as not only a war for independence but also a civil war and global conflict. Co-directed with Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, the series integrates archival footage, modern geographic overlays, and expert commentary to challenge simplistic myths of America’s origin. Burns says the project aims to “strip away the barnacles of nostalgia†from a deeply complex moment in world history. Released just as the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary, the documentary comes at a time of national reflection. It’s available now on PBS and via the PBS app.
